Youth Services Associate

Job Description: The River Forest Public Library is searching for an enthusiastic Youth Services Associate
to support our Children’s Services Department. This department serves kids birth-4th grade and their parent/caregivers. There will also be occasional opportunities to assist the Teen Services staff with programs for kids in grades 5-8. This position will provide valuable experiences for someone preparing for a career in public library youth services. The ideal candidate would intend to stay in this para-professional position for one to two years.
The Youth Services Associate will assist the Manager of Children’s Services with:
• Providing reference and readers advisory services in the Children’s Room.
• Promoting the Children’s collection and programs by creating print and online book lists, displays of library materials, and contributing to the Kid’s Blog.
• Assisting with the development and implementation of programs for children birth through 4th grade.
• Regular and ongoing administrative support tasks within the Department.
• Collection management responsibilities may eventually be available.
The Youth Services Associate will be trained and regularly scheduled to staff the Children’s Services Desk 2 week day and two weekend shifts each month. The Library is committed to cross-training para-professional staff to support all departments, so additional hours in other departments may be available.
Full/part time: Part Time: minimum of 8 hours and up to 15 hours each week. Weekends and evening shifts required. Hours may vary during the summer.
Starting schedule: Tues or Wed 9-1, Thurs 1-5 weekly plus one four hour Sunday and one 7.5 hours Saturday shift each month.
Additional hours to staff teen programs may be available on an intermittent basis.
A college degree and experience working with children ages birth-4th grade and/or young teens is required. Preference will be given to students enrolled in an accredited MLS or MLIS program. Knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature and the developmental needs and interest of children and young teens is important. The successful candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work independently and exercise initiative.
