Programs for Children

View the Online Library Program Calendar to find out more about upcoming events. You can view program descriptions, sort by audience and age, and sign up online for programs that require registration.

The River Forest Public Library offers targeted programs to meet community needs and interests as identified in our Strategic Plan. In planning and carrying out its sponsored programs, the Library aspires to meet the standards set forth in the Library Bill of Rights. The Library also recognizes that the resources available for the sponsorship of programs are limited and the selection, planning and implementation of Library sponsored programs ultimately rests in the discretion of the Library’s professional staff.

The library reserves the right to restrict program attendance. Programs may be cancelled, in advance or the day of, if minimum attendance is not met or due to unforeseeable circumstances.

Story time for kids ages birth-6 with a parent/caregiver.**Note: program is held at Whole Foods Market River Forest, 7245 Lake Street, River Forest, IL 60305, 708-366-1045.**

Monday, 8/10, 6:30 PM, PJ Story Time, 2-7 Years

Wear your pajamas and bring a stuffed friend to our special evening story time program! For ages 2-7 years with parent/caregiver.

6/1-7/31, Every Hero Has a Story! Children’s Summer Reading Program

Babies through children entering 5th grade who sign up and read will earn new books to take home and other great prizes. Enjoy daily programing for kids of all ages and weekly story times for babies and toddlers. The fun officially begins at our Summer Reading Kick Off Party on June 5. Skip the line! Between June 1-4, pre-register for the summer reading program and receive tickets for the Kick Off Party

6/8-7/31, Strong Minds, Strong Bodies Weekly Fitness Challenge

Try out weekly fitness challenges in the Children’s Room!

7/1-7/31, DIY July: Pentominoes

Can you make them fit? Investigate these interesting shape manipulatives in the Children’s Room.

Monday, 7/20, 1:30-3:00 PM, Art Activities, Ages 3 and Up

Drop in for a fun, new, art project or craft every week! All materials will be provided. Parent or caregiver must assist children under age 6.

Wednesday, 7/22, 3-4 PM, Comic Book Workshop, Grades 2-5

Love graphic novels and comic books? Do you have a great idea for a story? Learn how to make your own comic book at the Library. Advanced registration required.

Friday, 7/24, 9 AM-5 PM, Free Play Fridays, Children of All Ages

Enjoy a different free play activity each week in the Children’s Room. Activities will rotate between blocks, puppets, games, and crafts.

Saturday, 7/25, 2 PM, LEGO Club, Grades K-4

LEGO fans are invited to register each month and join us for LEGO Club. Participants will be given a new LEGO building challenge each time we meet. LEGO bricks will be provided. Advanced registration is required. For kids in grades K-4.

Learn about new books, play a fun game, and enjoy yummy snacks in the Children’s Room. This month’s theme is: Comic Books. For independent readers.

Tuesday, 7/28, 10-11 AM, Animal Heroes Story Time and Pet Parade, Children of All Ages and Caregivers

Animals are heroes too! Celebrate the wonderful animals in your life with a special story time featuring animal helpers. Then show off your favorite pets with a fun outdoor parade. This program will be held outside, weather permitting.

Thursday, 7/30, 10 AM, Movers and Shakers, Birth-6 years

Join My Gym’s Miss Debbie at the Library for fun movement activities using puppets, bubbles, and more! For kids birth-6 years old with parent/caregiver.

Friday, 7/31, 9 AM-5 PM, Free Play Fridays, Children of All Ages

Enjoy a different free play activity each week in the Children’s Room. Activities will rotate between blocks, puppets, games, and crafts.

Friday, 7/31, 6:30 PM, Musical Celebration with Little Miss Ann, Children of All Ages and Caregivers

Join us in our front garden as we celebrate the end of Summer Reading with a live concert! Little Miss Ann’s heartfelt songs, with her unique instrumentation, infectious melodies and soulful voice will have your whole family hooked.

August Programs

8/1-8/31, DIY August: Dominoes

Play the traditional dominoes game or stack them up and see them tumble in the Children’s Room.

Thursday, 8/13, 1-3 or 3:30-5:30 PM, Minecraft Madness, Grades 4-7

Calling all Minecraft builders, warriors, and fans! Head to RFPL for Minecraft-inspired activities, snacks, and to compete on challenges. Participants must have a River Forest library card that is in good standing to register. Both sessions are the same, so please just sign up for one time slot.

Wednesday, 8/19, 10 AM – 3 PM, DIY School Supplies, Children of All Ages and Caregivers

Get ready for school! Stop by the Children’s Room to assemble some great DIY school supplies for your first day back.

Friday, 8/21, 1-3 PM, Messy Art Day, Ages 2 and Up

Drop in and make fun (and messy) artistic creations at the Library. This program will be held outside weather permitting.

Friday, 8/21, 6-8 PM, Family Trivia Night, Ages 6 and up

Calling trivia buffs of all ages! Come share your expert knowledge, win prizes, and have a blast! Teams of 4-6 players are invited to participate in a fun night of family friendly trivia. A pizza dinner will be served. If you want to play but don’t have a full team, we will find you some great teammates. Advanced registration is required.

Saturday, 8/22, 2 PM, LEGO Club, Grades K-4
