Programs for Children

The River Forest Public Library offers targeted programs to meet community needs and interests as identified in our Strategic Plan. In planning and carrying out its sponsored programs, the Library aspires to meet the standards set forth in the Library Bill of Rights. The Library also recognizes that the resources available for the sponsorship of programs are limited and the selection, planning and implementation of Library sponsored programs ultimately rests in the discretion of the Library’s professional staff.

The library reserves the right to restrict program attendance. Programs may be cancelled, in advance or the day of, if minimum attendance is not met or due to unforeseeable circumstances.

Story Times

Tuesdays,  6/2-6/16,  10-11 AM, Mother Goose Café, Birth-18 months

Join us for coffee, stories, and play. Stories begin at 10:20 AM. For kids birth-18 months with parent/caregiver.

Thursdays,  6/4-6/18,  10 AM, Toddler Time, 18 months-3 years

Join us for stories, music, and movement. For kids 18 months-3 years with parent/caregiver.

Fridays,  6/5-6/19, 9:30 AM, Family Story Time @ Whole Foods Market, Birth-6 years

Story time for kids ages birth-6 with a parent/caregiver.**Note: program is held at Whole Foods Market River Forest, 7245 Lake Street, River Forest, IL 60305, 708-366-1045.**

Monday, 6/15, 6:30 PM, PJ Story Time, 2-7 Years

Wear your pajamas and bring a stuffed friend to our special evening story time program! For ages 2-7 years with parent/caregiver.

Thursday, 5/28, 10 AM, Toddler Art, Ages 2-3 with Caregiver

Calling all budding toddler artists! Come listen to a story and make a related masterpiece. Advanced registration is required.

Saturday, 5/30, 10 AM – 3 PM, DIY Vacation Activities, Children of All Ages and Caregivers

Going on a long car, plane, or train trip this summer? Stop by the Children’s Room to assemble some great DIY activities that you can take with you on your journeys.

Create interesting designs and pictures with these fun shapes in the Children’s Room.

6/1-7/31, Every Hero Has a Story! Children’s Summer Reading Program

Babies through children entering 5th grade who sign up and read will earn new books to take home and other great prizes. Enjoy daily programing for kids of all ages and weekly story times for babies and toddlers. The fun officially begins at our Summer Reading Kick Off Party on June 5. Skip the line! Between June 1-4, pre-register for the summer reading program and receive tickets for the Kick Off Party

6/8-7/31, Strong Minds, Strong Bodies Weekly Fitness Challenge

Try out weekly fitness challenges in the Children’s Room!

Friday, 6/5, 2:30-6 PM, Summer Reading Kick Off Party, All Ages

Start your summer off right! Sign up for our summer reading program and then join us in the park for a bounce house, inflatable obstacle course, popcorn, and lawn games. All summer reading participants are welcome to attend. Skip the line! Pre-register for the summer reading program and receive tickets for the Kick Off Party beginning June 1.

Thursday, 6/11, 1-3 or 3:30-5:30 PM, Minecraft Madness, Grades 4-7

Calling all Minecraft builders, warriors, and fans! Head to RFPL for Minecraft-inspired activities, snacks, and to compete on challenges. Participants must have a River Forest library card that is in good standing to register. Both sessions are the same, so please just sign up for one time slot.

Friday, 6/12, 9 AM-5 PM, Free Play Fridays, Children of All Ages

Enjoy a different free play activity each week in the Children’s Room. Activities will rotate between blocks, puppets, games, and crafts.

Saturday, 6/13, 9:30-10:30 AM, Superhero Story Time, Ages 2 and up

Calling all superheroes! Fly on over to the Library for an action packed story time adventure featuring stories, songs, and a cape-making craft. Dressing up as your favorite superhero is encouraged.

Monday, 6/15, 1:30-3:00 PM, Art Activities, Ages 3 and Up

Drop in for a fun, new, art project or craft every week! All materials will be provided. Parent or caregiver must assist children under age 6.

Tuesday, 6/16, 3-4:30 PM, Heroes of Greek Mythology, Grades 2-5

Party like Zeus! Play games, do crafts and have fun while you learn about ancient heroes of Greek Mythology. Advanced registration required.

Wednesday, 6/17, Time: TBD, Touch-A-Truck, Children of All Ages and Caregivers

Have you ever been up close and personal with a real fire truck or police car? Come explore the real thing and touch the trucks at the Library. This program will be held outside, weather permitting.

Thursday, 6/18, 3-5 PM, Comic Book Creations, Grades 4-8

Upcycle old comic books and make buttons, magnets, bracelets and more!

Thursday, 6/18, 5-6 PM, Pre-Party in the Park, All Ages

Join us at Centennial Park from 5-6 PM to do crafts, play games, and sign up for our summer reading program. The party continues at 6:15 with the River Forest Park District’s Party in the Park featuring Leonardo Music, face painting, balloon twisters, and food.

Friday, 6/19, 9 AM-5 PM, Free Play Fridays, Children of All Ages

Enjoy a different free play activity each week in the Children’s Room. Activities will rotate between blocks, puppets, games, and crafts.

Saturday, 6/20, 2-3:30 PM, Superhero Party, Grades K-4

Come to the Library for some super strength fun.  Make your own custom superhero cape and enjoy games, trivia, snacks, and more.  Dressing up as your favorite superhero is encouraged. Advanced registration required.

Monday, 6/22, 1:30-3:00 PM, Art Activities, Ages 3 and Up

Drop in for a fun, new, art project or craft every week! All materials will be provided. Parent or caregiver must assist children under age 6.

Monday, 6/22, 7 PM, Book Bonanza: Fantasy Books, Grades K-4

Learn about new books, play a fun game, and enjoy yummy snacks in the Children’s Room. This month’s theme is: Fantasy Books. For independent readers.

Tuesday, 6/23, 3-4 PM, Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles, All Ages

Get up close and personal with reptiles as you join us in our front garden for this live, hands-on show featuring animals from around the world.

Wednesday, 6/24, 3:30-4:30 PM, Just Dance Wii Tournament, Grades K-5

Can you move and groove to the music? Test out your dancing skills at this fun Wii game tournament. Advanced registration required.

Thursday, 6/25, 10 AM, Movers and Shakers, Birth-6 years

Join My Gym’s Miss Debbie at the Library for fun movement activities using puppets, bubbles, and more! For kids birth-6 years old with parent/caregiver.

Thursday, 6/25, 2-3 PM, Princess Training Camp, Ages 4-8

Do you have what it takes to be a princess? Test your skills with games, activities, and crafts. Dressing up like your favorite princess is encouraged. Advanced registration required.

Friday, 6/26, 9 AM-5 PM, Free Play Fridays, Children of All Ages

Saturday, 6/27, 2 PM,  LEGO Club, Grades K-4

LEGO fans are invited to register each month and join us for LEGO Club. Participants will be given a new LEGO building challenge each time we meet. LEGO bricks will be provided. Advanced registration is required. For kids in grades K-4.
